Preparing for Your Brain Map

What is a QEEG brain map?

A QEEG brain map is an in office test that provides us with information about the electrical activity taking place in your brain. It gives us an understanding of which brain frequencies are deficient, excessive or balanced in different neural regions. Once we have this information we can create a treatment plan or protocol specific to your needs.

The brain is a highly complex organ made up of billions of cells called neurons. Neurons send and receive messages to and from all parts of your body. These messages are electrical impulses that create brain waves. The brain map is an important tool we use to evaluate your brainwaves and identify opportunities to improve communication between various regions of the brain. The brain map is able to capture a window of brain activity, analyze the data, and create a visual representation for each lobe of the brain and each specific brain wave (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta).

What do I have to do for the test? How does it work?

A QEEG brain map session typically takes between 30 minutes and 45 minutes. A cap containing 13 receptor sites and corresponding wires to both your head and ears is placed on your head.  Next, a saline mixture is placed in each receptor site using a syringe. This mixture promotes a strong connectivity between your brain activity in those areas and the receptor site. Once a strong connection has been made at each receptor site, the computer being used can obtain a reading of your brain’s electrical activity.

You will first be asked to sit as still as possible with your eyes closed for approximately 6 minutes, but without entering into a deeply relaxed or sleep-like state. You will then be asked to sit with your eyes open for another 6 minutes. Your technician will inform you of the time as it passes and will offer you breaks if needed. Please be sure to speak up if you need that break.

The test is painless and you will not feel any electrical activity on your head as the recording of your brain waves is completed.

Instructions/Preparation Checklist

The following instructions are for clients to review and follow prior to a QEEG brain map. Following these instructions will help assure the best results.

Illness ~ If you are sick several days leading up to or the day of your scheduled QEEG, we ask for you to reschedule. In order to obtain the most accurate results, it is best for you to be feeling well and healthy for at least 2 days prior to your QEEG.

Sleep ~ It is best to get a good night’s sleep prior to a QEEG. Let us know if you have any sleep problems or disturbances in general or had a poor sleep the night before your QEEG.

Hair & Scalp ~ Your hair should be clean and washed either the day of or night before your QEEG appointment. When you arrive please make sure your hair is completely dry and free of all hair products. Bring a hat or a scarf with you if you would like to cover your hair after your appointment as it will be damp after your brain map.

Medications ~ In order to obtain an accurate map of your brain you need to stop taking the following medications for the length of time indicated.

ADHD medication: None for 24 hours before map.

SSRIs and Benzodiazepines: None for 24 hours before map.

Antihistamines: None for 8 hours before map.

**Please let our front desk know if you need help working around your medication schedule so that we can time it with the least amount of disruption to your dosing times**

Do not make any changes in any other medication(s) unless authorized by your physician and ask to talk to our neurofeedback technician prior to arrival if this is not feasible at all.

Caffeine ~ Avoid drinking excessive amounts of caffeinated beverages the day of your QEEG (one cup is fine). Drinks with excessive amounts of caffeine content (e.g. Red Bull) should not be consumed at least 15 hours prior to your QEEG.

Alcohol and Drugs ~ Alcohol should be avoided at least 72 hours prior to your QEEG. Marijuana should be avoided at least 72 hours prior to your QEEG.

Contact Lenses ~ Please do not wear contact lenses the day of your map.

The day of the QEEG, you should…

- Eat a high protein breakfast.

- Drink plenty of water.

- Not wear any makeup on your forehead or ear lobes.

- Not wear any jewelry on your neck or ears.

- Avoid nicotine at least 3 hours prior to your session.

- Bring any medications or supplements you would like to take after your QEEG is complete.

*PLEASE LIST ALL MEDICATIONS YOU TAKE ON YOUR HEALTH HISTORY FORM AND ANY CONCUSSIONS OR HITS TO THE HEAD THAT YOU MAY HAVE HAD IN THE PAST**

The Brain Map Report

Here are several pages from the brain map report: Once your map is complete, you will be scheduled for a visit to review it with the doctor or clinician.

This page shows an analysis of each lobe of the brain (frontal, parietal, central, temporal and occipital) for each type of brain wave: Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta. Green indicates a normal level, red is elevated and yellow is extreme.

The Discriminants Analysis page shows a visual meter for the major functions of the brain, such as the cognitive, emotional, memory processing, executive functions, and more.

The Emotional and Cognitive Analysis compares the results of your self-assessment against the results of the brain map and helps identify problem areas within the brain. Red indicates a strong potential match, green indicates no match.

The Midline Analysis is a visual reference of your brainwaves compared to normal ones. Gray bars are normal levels, color bars are from your brain map.

Based on the results of your brain map, the report will generate suggested protocols for training your brain back into normal ranges, as well as suggested supplements.

The brain map is a revolutionary new tool in accurately identifying the problem areas of the brain. It takes the guesswork out of the assessment process and provides an accurate road map for improving your health and well being.
