The Brain’s Role In Chronic Pain and Chronic Fatigue

Chronic pain is defined as any pain lasting more than 12 weeks. Chronic fatigue is a feeling of exhaustion or tiredness that does not go away with sleep.  It is estimated that 20% of the US population suffers from one of these conditions.

Interestingly enough, recent research has shown that the BRAIN may play an important role in the causes of chronic pain and fatigue. But more importantly it may also hold the key to recovery.

Pain is often perceived as a physical ailment, however the brain can play an important role in its cause. Patients with long term pain often have emotional impairments in the cortical regions of the brain that are also associated with depression or anxiety. For example, a person with anxiety is often tense, and tension can lead to aches and pains when one is not fully relaxing their muscles. Similarly, depression can lead to a lack of muscle activity that can cause slight atrophy from limited use.

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive tool for targeting areas of brain function that are not working properly. This computer-based therapy can directly target the regions of the brain responsible for handling stress, relaxation and cognitive function. These areas can exert a direct influence on the processing of pain, which can help reduce or eliminate both conditions.
